We all know that God's greatest gift to mankind was His only begotten Son, Jesus. Christmas is the perfect time to remember and acknowledge this gift. But there are gifts we receive for God daily as we go through this life.
As my tribute to this 'gift giving time,' I want to tell a story that really makes a person think about all the blessings we are given. If you are from my church, you would have read this in the September bulletin, so it will be a repeat to you.
Once there was an elderly lady who moved into a nursing home. The lady's husband had died years prior; she had also lost her sight some time ago. Now as her health began getting worse, and most of her kids lived out of town, she agreed with them that the nursing home would be best for all. On the day they moved her in, she began walking around the tiny room touching the furniture to get familiar with the arrangement. As she stroked her hand along the dresser, tears came into her eyes and she kept saying "how beautiful it was." Then, she felt her way over to the small bed and said, "how wonderful it was."
One of her granddaughters was puzzled and asked her, "Grandmother, I don't understand. Grandpa is gone, you've lost your sight, and now you've left your home to live in this tiny space. How can you be so happy to be here?"
The lady sat her down and explained, " The Lord God has always taken care of me. He has blessed me more than I could ever deserve; a loving husband, a wonderful family, plenty to eat, and so many treasures unseen. I figure if He wants me to have this room to live in, then it must be the most special room there is, and I praise Him and thank Him for it."
( I realize our family and others have had problems with the quality of care people get at the nursing homes out there today, but try to put that aside and think about what she's saying. She trusts God to take care of her. He's the only one who can truly take care of our needs. Merry Christmas everyone!)
